Galgorm today announced the launch of a brand new recruitment drive to hire more than 180 additional new team members for a range of hospitality roles for its hotels and restaurants in Ballymena, Belfast and Templepatrick.

From chefs to bar tenders, spa therapists and managers, to facilities staff, housekeepers, drivers and night porters, the company behind the world renowned Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort said the roles will help to meet anticipated demand when the hospitality sector reopens in the coming months.

Galgorm Collection said it is investing more than £5m in annual wages creating the new roles, which include both full and part time positions and forms part of its advanced preparations for the full and safe reopening of its properties.

Colin Johnston, Galgorm Collection Managing Director, said:

“I am absolutely thrilled to confirm more than 180 brand new jobs and to commence recruitment for a wide range of hospitality roles across our collection of properties. This new initiative will expand our team by an additional 25 per cent and bring our total workforce to 900 team members. “

Today’s announcement confirms our commitment to further developing our world-class hospitality provision and reaffirms our confidence in the sector’s recovery. We are currently working towards an April start date for our first new team members and we look forward to the Executive confirming a reopening date for hospitality and tourism sector so that we can begin onboarding our new recruits and facilitating a return to work as soon as possible.”

The announcement was welcomed by Economy Minister Diane Dodds:

This is positive news and represents a strong foot forward in Northern Ireland collectively forging a path to recovery. The hospitality industry has faced unprecedented challenges over the last 12 months and our focus now is on ensuring a safe and sustainable reopening of the sector when the time is right. Galgorm has continued to demonstrate strong leadership for the industry and this announcement will provide a beacon of light for the rebuilding of the sector.”

Tourism Northern Ireland Chief Executive John McGrillen also welcomed the news:

“The closure of the hospitality sector across Northern Ireland has been sorely felt and the full impact of this still remains to be seen. Today’s announcement will provide a much-needed lifeline for many hospitality workers in an industry hard-hit by the pandemic and I hope this important announcement will help provide renewed confidence and momentum in working towards the sector’s recovery.”

The world-renowned and multi-award-winning Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort, located in Ballymena, is set to hire an additional 94 team members across its accommodation, spa and restaurants. Recently named Best Spa Experience within the UK and Ireland at the Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence 2021 and crowned Resort Spa of the Year at the World Spa & Wellness Awards 2020, the new hires will bolster its 720-strong team and build upon its award-winning credentials.

Galgorm warns up to 75% of jobs in the sector could go by Christmas.

The managing director of one of Northern Ireland’s largest hospitality groups is calling on the Northern Ireland Executive to urgently find a safe and sustainable way to protect the sector from the devastating impact of any new lockdown restrictions.

The Executive will meet later on Thursday to review the recent rise in Covid-19 cases in Northern Ireland and is expected to discuss measures to mitigate its spread.

Galgorm Collection Managing Director, Colin Johnston, who runs Northern Irelands premier luxury Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort, is warning the Executive that unless a balanced way forward is found to protect health, jobs and livelihoods, up to 75% of jobs within the sector could go by Christmas.

“The industry reopened at the start of July and has been trading safely and sustainably during this time. If this cannot continue, our people must be in a position to be able to provide for their families. In the face of the very serious issues being discussed, support must be found to ensure that the entire hospitality sector and all its potential is not lost for at least an entire generation,” Colin Johnston said.

The stark reality is that if we enter another period of lockdown without any measures in place to safely sustain the industry, and a vital component of our economy, up to three quarters of hospitality jobs will be lost by Christmas.”

More than 750 team members are employed at Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort, with 900 employed across the Galgorm Collection range of hospitality businesses which includes Café Parisien and Fratelli in Belfast, The Rabbit at Templepatrick and Castle Kitchen and Bar in Ballymena. The company has invested more than £60 million in the sector over two decades.

Colin Johnston said, “As a resort that places the health and safety of our guests and team members as our absolute priority, we understand that everyone’s health is vitally important however we must urgently find a way forward to protect jobs and livelihoods and the very future of tourism and hospitality industry in Northern Ireland.”

The Northern Ireland tourism industry accounts for more than 65,000 jobs and was on track this year to deliver a record £1 billion in visitor spend. In recent years, Northern Ireland has cemented its status on the world stage as a must-visit destination with its rich tourism, culture and heritage offering supplemented by major international events including The Open Championship in July last year.

Earlier this year, Tourism Northern Ireland launched a new destination brand, ‘Embrace a Giant Spirit’, to promote Northern Ireland on the national and international stage. The Northern Ireland Tourism Alliance, established in 2018, had also forecast the sector would an additional 25,000 future jobs based on its growth potential.

One of the world’s premier, luxury hotel and spa resorts, Galgorm’s Colin Johnston is now calling for greater clarity from the Executive in relation to its plans, strategy and expected outcomes from its interventions and stressed the need for much greater contact and collaboration with the tourism and hospitality sector so that decision makers can clearly understand the impacts of the measures being taken.

Colin said, “We requested to meet with the Minister of Health, Robin Swann, and his advisors, on 18th August to open a meaningful dialogue and to create a forum where information and views could be routinely shared. Unfortunately, this was never reciprocated. We must have a collaborative approach to find the best way forward for the sake of our economy, our people and everyone’s health and wellbeing.”

Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort reopened on 27th July, following an 18 week shut down, in line with public health and government guidance and has been a champion for the industry nationally and internationally in prioritising the health and safety of its team members and guests.

The Resort was one of the UK’s first hospitality businesses to secure the new AA COVID Confident Mark for its health and safety commitment and was also a champion for the ‘We’re Good to Go’ industry standard, in partnership with Tourism Northern Ireland and Visit Britain.

Historic luxury hotel in Crawfordsburn reopens on 3 September under new ownership by premier hospitality group Galgorm Collection

Galgorm Collection today revealed plans to throw open the doors of its newest venture and welcome guests and visitors back to The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn from Friday 3 September.

Galgorm Collection confirmed the purchase of the luxury hotel in the picturesque village of Crawfordsburn in a multi-million-pound deal earlier this year. The highly anticipated opening follows an ambitious £1 million investment to revitalise and upgrade the historic destination, in line with other Collection properties.

Guests and visitors can enjoy the new-look 1614 Bar whilst the refurbished 120-seater Old Inn restaurant offers diners a brand new menu that marries homely classics with modern dining, featuring French-inspired dishes, seafood and salads. Exuding a relaxed yet elegant vibe, the restaurant also incorporates a large outdoor patio providing a front row view of Crawfordsburn Country Park.

Plans are currently under way to upgrade each of the hotel’s 32 individually-styled bedrooms, with junior suites incorporating bespoke finishing touches including a free-standing copper bath whilst the larger suite boasts its own private balcony complete with hot tub. The exclusive Cottage accommodation situated in the grounds of The Old Inn will also come complete with its own secluded outdoor hot tub for the ultimate tranquil forest bathing experience.

The development of a brand-new Tree Top Spa, featuring a variety of attractions including a vitality pool, two hot tubs, steam room and sauna and forest view relax space are also progressing. Additionally, plans to reimagine the hotel’s two wedding spaces are due to be revealed in the coming months, with refurbishment expected to be complete by early 2023.

The evening was as glamorous as one would expect from a JW Marriott brand hotel; a delectable 6- course fine dining menu adorned each table throughout the night and was paired with fine wines and champagne from Moët et Chandon. Entertainment fitting of the destination included a Dragon Dance, a Vietnamese based string quartet performance by Độc Cầm - Toxic Quartet, and a local Ao Dai Dance, all of which added to the evening’s Asian flair.

As proud hosts of Ireland's first MLX Quartz Bed, Catherine gives us the need to know details on the ancient Greek concept of psammo therapy...

As a digital marketer, the majority of my working days are spent behind a luminous screen scouring the internet. A fairly hazard-free role you could say, and to some extent would be correct. However, it is not entirely without its repercussions (and I’m not talking about the flurry of dog memes all vying for my attention in any one afternoon). Bad posture and neck strain come part and parcel of desk-based roles. An early morning stretch and limber up for the day ahead regularly results in the sort of cracks less akin to that of someone in their early twenties. That was of course until a friend had suggested a massage. Really? I thought to myself. It all seemed a little self-indulgent and perhaps not something I truly needed or could justify treating myself to for that matter. After some persuasion (quite frankly, not a lot), I stand corrected. My name is Catherine and I am a Spa convert.

Enter the MLX Quartz Treatment Bed. “What’s that?” I hear you proclaim. Much like myself, when I was introduced to the concept, I was instinctively intrigued by this term that my colleagues had spoken so highly of. Derived from the Greek concept of psammo therapy, or hot sand therapy, the MLX Quartz is the modern take on a century-old approach to delivering the utmost in physical and holistic relaxation. 

As it’s eponymously named component would suggest, Quartz beds are something of a luxury; a rare and restorative highway to relaxation. So with this in mind, once I had made my decision to book in for a full body massage, I knew I had to experience first hand for myself, just how truly special such treatments are. After all, Galgorm proudly house the first MLX Quartz Bed on the island of Ireland! 

Fast Forward to Tuesday…

Having completed my pre-treatment questionnaire and feeling refreshed following a lemon & ginger tea (made all the sweeter by the accompaniment of two luxurious truffles), I was soon introduced to my Therapist. Now, as a self-confessed spa amateur, I can’t help but confess to being somewhat apprehensive of the treatment. Oh, how wrong I was! Upon meeting my Spa Therapist, the wonderful Zoe, any preconceived ideas of awkwardness were swiftly dispelled.

Upon entering the treatment room I was firstly amazed by the treatment table which houses the alpha quartz sand. Instantly I knew this would be something of a luxury and with the scent of essential oils in the air, instant relaxation ensued. A quick chat with Zoe revealed the format of the treatment which would include singing bowls and poultice. Stay with me on this one…

Now, you may be wondering how comfortable laying on a bed of quartz sand can be and I am here to confirm that it is truly a dream. Once laying upon the protective polyurethane layer the warmth of the hot sand instantly relaxes as your therapist intricately moulds the quartz sand around your body in order to support the contours of your body. In my cosy, relaxed state I was immediately transported to a warmer climate, cocooned on a warm sandy beach (albeit minus the factor 50). If this state of relaxation was only the beginning I was surely in for a treat. 

Om-Believable 

As a firm believer in the powers of meditation in mindfulness, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the treatment incorporated elements throughout with the introduction of two singing bowls. An odd sensation to begin with; once placed on my back Zoe struck the bowls, instantaneously sending vibrations throughout my spine as well as the room, with a sensation quite unlike anything I had previously experienced. This signified the beginning of the treatment and proved the perfect precursor to ensure I was in the utmost relaxed of states. At this point I couldn’t help but contemplate how dubious I had been before arriving for my treatment, this was exactly the respite from everyday life that we all require from time to time - and with that thought, the massage began. 

Utilising the most luxurious of oils, Zoe began the massage with her hands before introducing the heated Poultice which sets this treatment apart from it’s traditional massage counterparts. The two poultice or ‘stemps’ as they are sometimes referred to contained quartz sand, kept in place with cloth and heated to the desired temperature. The sensation from heated poultice alleviating knots and soothing muscular pain was nothing short of restorative. With this tranquil combination of cocooned warmth achieved from the bed, targeted relief from the poultice and the calming practice of massage techniques, it was a particularly mean feat to stay awake. The journey of relaxation continued as the treatment progressed from top to toe, before maneuvering to repeat the techniques on my front. The experience then concluded with a repositioning of the bed to a zero gravity position to facilitate the scalp massage, evoking a deep state of relaxation - as though I could have been any more at ease with the world. 

Slowly and with as much grace as could be expected from my dream-like hazy state, once the treatment had concluded, I was greeted with fresh towels and an ice cold glass of water before chatting to my therapist who informed me that my suspicions were correct and my shoulders housed a plethora of tension - who knew! Having just spent 90 minutes in heated environment, I was advised to drink as much water as possible to stay hydrated throughout the evening. Guided to the relaxation area of The Spa at Galgorm and feeling as though I could take on the world, the icy delights continued with a refreshing sorbet to round off my mid-week escapism.

Luxury historic hotel The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn, has confirmed it will open a new outdoor spa offering exclusively for residents from 1 December following a £2.5 million investment to bring Galgorm’s renowned world-class hospitality and spa offering to the historic property.

Perched above Crawfordsburn Country Park, the new Treetop Spa at The Old Inn offers guests unrivalled forest views stretching out to the North Down coastline and will see the addition of a range of new experiences including a hydrotherapy pool, steam room, sauna, hot tubs and relax space set within its tranquil grounds, offering residents an enhanced hospitality experience.

Occupying a prominent 1.5-acre site in the heart of Crawfordsburn village - just 20 minutes from Belfast – the iconic thatched-roof property is one of the UK and Ireland’s top hotels. With a rich history dating back to 1614 The Old Inn is primed for a new chapter of growth with Galgorm Collection at its helm.

Since acquiring the property in April last year, Galgorm Collection, which owns the world-renowned Galgorm and a number of other properties across Belfast and Antrim, has already invested more than £1 million in refurbishing the property to its exacting, first-class standards.

This has included revamping its cosy 1614 bar and refurbishing its 120-seater Old Inn restaurant which offers diners a brand new menu that marries homely classics with modern dining, featuring French-inspired dishes, seafood and salads.

Galgorm Collection is also upgrading all 32 guestrooms as part of plans to revitalise and upgrade the historic destination, in line with other Collection properties.

Individually styled and luxuriously appointed, The Old Inn offers five room types - petite, carriage, highway, junior suite and suite – with some of its premier room offerings already refreshed.

The Old Inn Suite now boasts its own private balcony complete with outdoor hot tub overlooking the Treetop Spa whilst the first of its Junior Suites also completed a makeover to include

bespoke finishing touches including a free-standing copper bath to complement the chic French-inspired furniture.

The property’s premier cottage accommodation set within the hotel’s grounds – and famed for being the honeymoon spot of world-famous local author C.S. Lewis – now comes complete with its own secluded outdoor hot tub for the ultimate tranquil forest bathing experience.

Plans to reimagine the hotel’s private dining space are also in progress, with refurbishment expected to be complete by early 2023.

Galgorm confirms £1,000,000 strategic investment following multi-million-pound deal

Galgorm Collection has today confirmed the purchase of the historic, four-star luxury hotel The Old Inn in a multi-million-pound deal.

The investment by Galgorm Collection, which owns the world-renowned Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort and a number of other properties across Belfast and Antrim, includes £1,000,000 in further development and extension plans to the property.

The company has also confirmed that all existing team members will be retained across the North Down property which is currently preparing to safely reopen its doors as soon as hospitality restrictions are lifted.

With a history dating back to 1614 and links to the world-famous local author C.S. Lewis, the iconic thatched-roof property has become one of the country’s top hotels, having received the prestigious accolade of AA Hotel of the Year in 2017/18 after a series of enhancements and extensions.

Occupying a prominent 1.5-acre site in the heart of Crawfordsburn village, the property is located adjacent to Crawfordsburn Country Park, offering a tranquil escape just 20 minutes from Belfast.

The hotel boasts 33 individually styled bedrooms, two wedding suites, and the 78-seater Lewis restaurant. As part of its investment, Galgorm Collection plans to develop the property to the rear of the site.

As well as supporting its world-class leisure proposition, the latest move by Galgorm represents a further strategic investment of the group’s hospitality assets, but also reinforces the company’s ongoing commitment to the tourism industry and Northern Ireland as a whole.

The acquisition of The Old Inn adds to the group’s already impressive suite of hospitality assets, which includes the award-winning Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort, the 3AA Rosette River Room Restaurant, Gillies Bar & Grill Restaurant and Fratelli’s. The group also operates Castle Kitchen & Bar at Galgorm Castle Golf Club in Ballymena.

For the past ten out of twelve years, we’ve been to Galgorm for Christmas.

Winter Wonderland is our family tradition!

Post-Christmas, when you catch up with friends and colleagues after the break, the general consensus is that whilst they had a good time, it was stressful in one way or another.

Most families have their own traditions, but usually the build-up to Christmas poses, for most, a multitude of different questions—some good, some possibly not so good. Add into the mix children wanting their independence, and a common reply becomes: “Do we have to?”

For us, as a family and with our extended family, it’s simple—we go to Galgorm for Christmas. 

We have four children: the eldest is 12, twins are 10, and the youngest is nine.

For the past ten out of twelve years, we’ve been to Galgorm for Winter Wonderland, it's our family tradition. On the two occasions we’ve missed (and I can assure you, the backlash from young and old was not polite!), it was due to childbirth or the ill health of an elderly relative.

We go for three days—we arrive on Christmas Eve and check out on Boxing Day. Not only do we check out on Boxing Day, we also book for the following year!

From the second we arrive to the minute we leave, it’s simply magical. It’s something that neither young nor old would ever want to miss. The staff are amazing, the hotel is stunning, the ambience is magical, the food is wow—and just for three days, I start to believe.

The main question over the years from people who haven’t stayed there is: “Does Santa visit?”

Not only does he visit, but we see him on Christmas morning after taking the train down to meet him!

To try and convey to people how good it is, they genuinely don’t believe us—so here is a summary of our tradition:

• Arrival (Christmas Eve): After being welcomed by the staff and checking in, our bags are whisked away to our room. As a family group, we meet in McKendry's Bar for a catch-up and a drink around one of the open fires.

• Afternoon Tea: Once everyone has arrived, we make our way to afternoon tea, which is simply wow.

• Swim & Room Magic: After afternoon tea, with the clan fed and watered, we visit the magnificant Thermal Spa Village and then back to our room. When we arrive, the Christmas tree lights are twinkling, and a selection of treats awaits. Over the years, these have included reindeer shortbread with everyone’s names iced on them!

• Christmas Eve Dinner: A sumptuous affair, with a choice of restaurants, where the festive spirit continues. Then, it’s off to bed—because the big fella is due. Returning to our room, we find the beds turned down, a glass of milk for Santa, carrots for the reindeer, and sparkly glitter so they know where to land!

• Christmas Morning: He’s been! Presents everywhere! A stocking on our door, and breakfast awaits, with an immense choice topped off with a complimentary glass of champagne—it is Christmas, after all!

• Santa Express: We take the Santa Express to visit the big fella, receive outstanding gifts, and have our annual photo with the man himself. Then it’s back to the hotel for another thrip to the spa for one and all.

• Christmas Lunch: Incredible! As we gather after lunch for another drink somewhere in the hotel, everyone insists they couldn’t eat again for a week. Meanwhile, the children are whisked off to the VIP screening of a film in the Rolls Royce, while we adults sit back and relax. Shortly after, the kids return with pick ’n’ mix galore—strangely, mostly eaten by the adults!

• Christmas Night Buffet: A buffet dinner which nobody claimed earlier they could eat—but everyone does! We socialise with the other guests and, on the odd occasion, even enjoy a sing-song.

• Boxing Day: Reluctantly, we depart.

Do we believe? For three days, I do. I simply cannot explain how good it is—the atmosphere, the staff, the food, the activities, and just pure fun. Stunning. Simply stunning!

Galgorm Collection have agreed to buy Templeton Hotel, marking a staggering £10m investment in Northern Ireland tourism by the hospitality giant in the last 12 months

The Galgorm Collection previously known as Tullymore House Ltd will invest a further £7million in the local economy as they agree to buy the Templeton Hotel in Templepatrick.

Galgorm, Northern Ireland’s globally renowned luxury hotel and wellness destination, has been chosen to host one of the world’s most prestigious hospitality award ceremonies, the World Luxury Awards 2024.

The glittering grand gala is set to attract over 200 guests including VIPs, luxury hotel, spa and restaurant owners from countries across the globe, along with international media.
