Galgorm Castle Education and Preservation Limited (GCEP), the custodian of Galgorm Castle has submitted a full planning application for a landmark restoration and regeneration project.

 

The ambitious project will see an investment of over £14 Million, creating 125 jobs during construction and a further 90 permanent positions once the restoration of Galgorm Castle, Church and Ploughman’s House is completed.

 

The project comprises of three interconnected strands:

• The restoration of the Castle, Stables and Courtyard followed by a conversion of the castle into a 30-bedroom boutique hotel to be operated by Galgorm Collection.

• The restoration of the ruined Church into a 60-seater intimate heritage hub for small group, literature, drama and historic performances.

• The development of the Ploughman’s House into a 120-seat performance centre for traditional music and arts, creating a place for performance, creativity, public gatherings and visitor space.

Ian Paisley, Chair of the Trustees of GECP, said, “Our vision is to move beyond piecemeal development and address the estate’s decline through a single, holistic and genuinely transformative plan; one that respects Galgorm’s built fabric, honours its intangible heritage, and recognises the special place it holds in the heart of the community.

An outstanding example of Jacobean architecture, Galgorm Castle dates back to the early seventeenth century. It represents a unique nexus of cultural, political, and social history; a microcosm of Northern Ireland’s rich and storied past.

 

The Castle has played a part in numerous historic events from the Battle of the Boyne to the Easter Rising. Figures associated with both government and rebellion, and with cultural activities from the development of the Orange Order to the preservation of language and culture, have found a home at Galgorm. There are few estates in Ireland where so many key historical figures and events converge.

The reinstatement of original paths, trails, and gardens will also connect the castle to its wider landscape thus improving links with the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Gracehill and providing the community with natural amenities for all to use and enjoy.

Yield: 25 individual cakes (25g each)

Components:

• Chocolate Sponge Cake Batter

• Salty Caramel Topping

• Jivara Chocolate Glaze

• Caramel Crisp Garnish

 

Chocolate Sponge Cake Batter

Ingredients:

• Unsalted Butter – 195g

• Fine Sea Salt – 5g

• Caster Sugar – 118g

• Vanilla Essence – 8g

• Egg Yolks – 78g

• Light Brown Sugar – 48g

• Plain Flour – 156g

• Cocoa Powder – 39g

• Baking Powder – 2g

 

French Meringue:

• Egg Whites – 118g

• Caster Sugar – 30g

 

Method:

1. Cream butter, caster sugar, salt, and vanilla until pale and smooth.

2. Whip yolks with light brown sugar until ribbon stage (approx. 45°C), then fold into the creamed butter.

3. Sift and fold in dry ingredients (flour, cocoa, baking powder).

4. Prepare meringue: whip whites and gradually add caster sugar until stiff peaks form.

5. Fold meringue into batter in three stages, keeping the mixture airy and smooth. Reserve for assembly.

 

Salted Caramel Topping

Ingredients:

• Caster Sugar – 150g

• Water – 38g

• Liquid Glucose – 10g

• Warm Cream – 70g

• Vanilla Bean – ¼ pod, split & scraped

• Unsalted Butter – 105g

• Fine Sea Salt – 0.5g

 

Method:

1. Combine sugar, water, and glucose in a saucepan. Cook to a dark amber caramel (approx. 180°C).

2. Deglaze with warm cream infused with vanilla bean, stirring carefully.

3. Remove from heat, stir in butter and salt until smooth.

4. Emulsify with a hand blender until glossy and homogeneous.

5. Chill until thick enough to pipe but still soft.
   
   

Assemble & Bake

1. Preheat oven to 160°C.

2. Pipe 25g of chocolate batter into mini moulds.

3. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until the cakes spring back lightly.

4. Cool cakes completely on a wire rack.

 

Finishing Touches

1. Using a piping bag with a fine round or flat nozzle, pipe long, delicate strips of the Salty Caramel Topping across each mini cake.

2. Optionally, dip the sides or top in Jivara chocolate glaze and garnish with caramel crisp pearls.

3. Allow to set at room temperature before serving.

Galgorm is delighted to announce one of the world’s leading short game coaches Dave Pelz will set up his Scoring Game School at the Northern Ireland venue to serve as one of his main European coaching hubs.

Pelz is one of golf’s most well-known coaches who has dedicated a large part of his life to analysing the golf swing and paying particular attention to the short game. Through his Scoring Game School and team of dedicated coaches, he has helped thousands of golfers improve their game.

The American has worked with the very best in the game to complete beginners and every time believes he can improve a player’s short game. Pelz’s most recognisable student is Phil Mickelson and he worked with the lefthander as he won his six majors. Pelz says 11 of the professionals he has worked with over the years have won 18 majors between them.

“I can’t tell you how much we are looking forward to working with Galgorm, it really is very exciting,” said Pelz, who will offer one day clinics to three-day Scoring Game Schools at the Ballymena venue in 2023. 

“Galgorm has some of the best facilities in the country. It is a wonderful property and has so many great features that we can use for teaching The Scoring Game. The coaching team who visited Galgorm were very impressed with the entire setup. 

“We all know about the many tour events staged at Galgorm on the DP World Tour, LPGA Tour and other tours. They have the wonderful Castle championship course, teaching academy plus the ‘wee course’, a six-hole par three layout that will be great for our teaching.”

The author of the highly acclaimed Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible and Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible added: “We have specialised our coaching over the years. We love the game; we are all golfers and our family has been involved in the game for almost 50 years. We focus on the short game, wedges and putting. My background is in research. I used to be a research scientist working with NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center.”     

In the early days, Pelz was a player with designs of making it on tour. He won a scholarship to Indiana University at the same time a certain Jack Nicklaus attended Ohio State University. 

“My record against Jack was zero and 22 in direct competitions. I simply couldn’t beat the guy - nobody could,” said Pelz, who majored in physics. “I wanted to play golf for a living, tried to make it on tour but wasn’t good enough. As an analytical scientist, I set about trying to figure out why I wasn’t good enough. From that moment it’s been a 50-year journey of research and coaching in golf.” 

As the only Pelz Scoring Game School in Northern Ireland, there will be at least two qualified coaches for the bespoke residential teaching schools and clinics at Galgorm. The Pelz philosophy is that up to 68 per cent of golf shots for golfers of all ability occur inside 125 yards and on the putting green, the area of the game he refers to as ‘The Scoring Game’.

Scoring Game Schools identify mechanical issues in any swing before fixing them. From there, coaches can start to fine-tune, work on timing, rhythm and provide golfers with the tools they need to improve their short game - and ultimately lower their scores. A lifetime of experience will now be available exclusively at Galgorm in 2023.

Galgorm is delighted to announce a new long-term partnership with rising star Tom McKibbin, who will represent Northern Ireland’s internationally acclaimed Spa & Golf Resort as its new Touring Professional.

McKibbin has been making headlines for several years as a sensational amateur golfer, who has won prestigious tournaments around the world and represented Ireland from a young age. In April, the 18-year-old turned professional and made his professional debut at the Tenerife Open on the European Tour.

McKibbin will compete in several European Challenge Tour and full European Tour events for the remainder of the season. The Belfast golfer played out of Holywood Golf Club, the same club as Rory McIlroy and is now embarking on his own professional journey in the paid ranks.

The agreement heralds an exciting new chapter for the event, which has been elevated to European Tour status following a hugely successful inaugural edition on the European Challenge Tour in 2019. The 2021 event will continue to be played over two courses, Galgorm Castle and Massereene and will form part of the European Tour’s 2021 UK Swing, taking in tournaments in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England across July and August.

 

It will be the first time an event of this format is tri-sanctioned by the European Tour, LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour in the northern hemisphere – following in the footsteps of the ISPS HANDA Vic Open in Australia which has the same format.

 

The ISPS HANDA World Invitational will attract a field of 288 players, 144 men and 144 women. The women’s field will be split equally between the LPGA and the Ladies European Tour. The $2.35 million purse will be split evenly, with men and women competing for two equal prize funds.

 

The tournament will count towards the European Tour’s Race to Dubai and carry Team Europe Ryder Cup points, while the women’s tournament will count towards the Race to the CME Globe for women on the LPGA Tour, the Race to Costa del Sol on the Ladies European Tour (LET) and Solheim Cup points for both Team Europe and Team USA.

A traditional 72-hole stroke play format will be in place with men and women competing at two venues, Galgorm Castle Golf Club and Massereene Golf Club, over the first two days before a halfway cut reduces the field to the top 60 professionals, including ties, in the men’s and women’s draws.

 

The third round will take place at Galgorm Castle before a further 54-hole cut takes place with the top 35 and ties from the men’s and women’s draws advancing to the final round on Sunday.

It will be the first time the County Antrim venue has hosted the island of Ireland’s national Open with the event moving into the date vacated by the rescheduling of The 2020 Ryder Cup to 2021.

 

The 2020 Ryder Cup would have been a celebration of Irish golf with three-time Major Champion Padraig Harrington captaining Europe in the contest at Whistling Straits – the third European Captain from the island of Ireland in the past four contests. While that will now happen next September, the 2020 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Galgorm this September will mark a new chapter in the tournament’s history.

 

The 2020 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open was originally scheduled to take place at Mount Juliet Estate in County Kilkenny from May 28-31, but was postponed on March 30 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

 

With quarantine restrictions for travellers into the Republic of Ireland ongoing and the ban on mass gatherings still in place, the European Tour made the decision to move the tournament to Northern Ireland where it will be subject to similar guidelines to the current ‘UK Swing’ events, including being played behind closed doors. Planning remains on-going for the tournament to return to Mount Juliet in 2021 providing all health guidelines in place at that time can be met.

 

Following the changes to the date and the venue, allied to the overall disruption to the schedule, the 2020 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open will have a prize fund of €1.25 million and therefore will not be part of the Rolex Series. The European Tour will announce full plans for the Rolex Series in due course.

 

The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open will, however, continue to drive Ireland’s status as a future Ryder Cup host country, the synergy even stronger given the fact that now, the centenary of The Ryder Cup and the centenary of the Irish Open both fall in 2027.

Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort has hosted the Northern Ireland Open on the European Challenge Tour since 2013, including last year’s innovative tournament – the ISPS Handa World Invitational Men|Women presented by Modest! Golf Management which featured both a men’s and women’s competition.

Despite hosting the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open from September 24-27, the County Antrim venue will continue its involvement with the Challenge Tour by also hosting the Northern Ireland Open hosted by The R&A from September 3-6.

 

The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort is the fourth time the tournament has been played in Northern Ireland since 2012 when Royal Portrush became the first course north of the Irish border to host the tournament since 1953.

 

Welshman Jamie Donaldson claimed his maiden European Tour title on that occasion before the event returned to Northern Ireland in 2015, when Dane Søren Kjeldsen won at Royal County Down, and in 2017 when Spain’s Jon Rahm triumphed at Portstewart Golf Club, the first of his two Irish Open victories to date.

Galgorm Resort & Spa, Northern Ireland’s leading luxury hotel and wellness destination, confirmed that it has acquired the bar and restaurant at Galgorm Castle Golf Club. 

Representing an investment of £600k, the company has begun an extensive redevelopment and refurbishment exercise which will see the existing dining facilities expanded and upgraded to include a 150-seat restaurant as well as a 60-seat open-air balcony terrace providing unrivaled views across the Castle grounds and golf course.

The all-new restaurant is expected to open in early July and will see the creation of 50 new jobs across the food, beverage and front-of-house departments.  

Home to the NI Open 2018, Galgorm Castle Golf Club will attract some of the biggest names in golf this August and with the restaurant due to be open well ahead of the tournament, spectators will be treated to a food and beverage offering on par with some of the world’s leading courses.

On the 16th of October, AYANA Bali welcomed distinguished guests from around the world for an unforgettable evening of tropical elegance. Just three days later, the awards moved to the enchanting Galgorm in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. On the 19th of October the sprawling estate, known for its lush gardens and opulent interiors, played host to a sophisticated evening of celebration. The gala embraced the rich cultural heritage of Northern Ireland, with live music performances, a gourmet banquet, and a true Irish sendoff at McKendry’s Bar after the closing of the ceremony.

Dog walks close to Galgorm

A stunning walk close to Galgorm is along the Maine Riverside. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. The walk can be started from Gillies Bar to the rear of Galgorm where the signposted route takes dog walkers along the enchanting River Maine. Dog walkers can also do a spot of birdwatching. Look out for Kingfishers, Goldcrests, Chiffchaffs & Sedge warblers. Dog walks a short drive from Galgorm Causeway Coast Way (35 min drive from Galgorm) offers some unforgettable walking routes, from Portstewart to Ballycastle, passing through the Causeway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (World Heritage Site) and several Areas of Special Scientific Interest. Galgorm Collection has announced the opening of Northern Ireland’s newest luxury hotel in an investment worth £10 million that will create an additional 26 hospitality jobs, taking its total workforce to almost 100 team members, and provide an exciting welcome break for visitors from this summer.

The 33-bedroom boutique hotel and spa - The Rabbit Hotel & Retreat – will open on 18 June and follows the purchase and dramatic transformation of the former Templeton Hotel in Templepatrick, a picturesque Co Antrim village located only 20 minutes from Belfast and 10 minutes from Belfast International Airport.

The property was acquired by Galgorm Collection in 2018 and now offers stylish accommodation, a luxury outdoor spa and lakeside walk, an onsite bar and restaurant and an exclusive-use events space for weddings and conferences.

Galgorm Collection Managing Director, Colin Johnston, said:

“After more than 18 months of extensive redevelopment and a challenging year for the hospitality industry we’re thrilled to throw open our doors and welcome guests to enjoy this unmatched new experience.
