NI Hospitality School extends partnership with three of the region’s top hotels to facilitate new training academy with guaranteed employment for six newly qualified chefs.

Aspiring chefs are being called to step up to the plate and enroll on a brand new training course, launched today by the Northern Ireland Hospitality School, offering students the chance to gain a chef qualification and secure guaranteed employment with one of Northern Ireland’s top hotels.

The brand new Chef Academy will see six successful candidates selected to undertake a year-long scholarship delivered through on-the-job training at one of Northern Ireland’s top hotels; Adair Arms Hotel, Galgorm Resort or Tullyglass House Hotel, where they will ultimately secure guaranteed employment.

Successful candidates will gain a nationally recognised qualification (FDQ Level 2 Diploma in Professional Chef - Northern Ireland), delivered by training partner South Eastern Regional College (SERC). The course involves not just classroom learning, but on the job training with our highly skilled kitchen brigade as well as unique experiences with our local food producers.

Representing an investment in year one of nearly £250,000 the new academy aims to recruit six locally based chef apprentices for its first intake in September, with applications now open.

The announcement follows the launch of the Northern Ireland Hospitality School last April, part funded by Ballymena-based charity The Gallaher Trust. To date, the school has already supported 24 students in gaining full-time employment with partnering hotels through its dedicated Bar Academy.

The launch of its new Chef Academy is the latest development in the school’s ambitious plans to support the hospitality sector locally and provide a pathway to employment for those seeking a career in the industry. Each year, the NI Hospitality School aims to facilitate employment for six chefs and 24 bartenders in a £685,000 annual investment, providing a significant boost to local employment.

You’re probably thinking of switching up your moisturisers for the season, but have you thought about your daily SPF? Doctors, dermatologists, and aesthetic practitioners are always talking about how crucial sunscreen is, but do you know what to look out for?

Why should we wear any sunscreen/SPF?

We all take pride in our skin, spending money on products to keep us looking radiant and healthy, however we can often fall foul of overlooking the importance of daily SPF, a key pillar in our skincare regime. Often anti-ageing is our number one concern, but your priority should always be to prevent sunburn, which can increase the risk of skin cancer. Another very important reason should be to protect the skin from the harmful UV rays that cause premature ageing and wrinkles. I ask clients to see it as an insurance to protect their investment in their skin. If you are investing in anti-wrinkle/dermal fillers or micro needling treatments, it is imperative that you protect your investment from being undone by the harmful effects caused by UV rays.

What you should be looking for in an SPF:

The label on your facial sunscreen should read “Broad Spectrum”. This guards you against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

• UVA (95% of Sun’s UV rays) causes immediate tanning and sunburn. In the long-term this can result in premature ageing, wrinkles, and an increase in the risk of some skin cancers.

• UVB (5% of Sun’s UV rays) causes delayed tanning sunburn and blistering. Long-term results can include an increase in the risk of skin cancer and premature ageing. Many sunscreens only protect against UVB leaving your skin unprotected against 95% of the sun’s rays, so always look out for Broad Spectrum SPF.

Expectation VS Reality

Traditionally the word sunscreen would conjure up images of thick, gloopy, sticky creams that sit on the skin, resulting in blocked pores, spots and preventing you from wearing makeup. Not to mention ruining your holiday wardrobe staples. Luckily this is no longer the case with experts developing modern sunscreen solutions suitable for all skin types. Options now include moisturisers for the skin complete with UVA & UVB protection, with some even containing antioxidants or skin brightening botanicals for a double boost to your skin. Check the labels on your favourite makeup products as many now include SPF in their formulation, including mineral powders.

Choosing the perfect SPF for you

As with all skincare, products are personal to you and your skin type and SPF is no different. With many options available depending on budget and formulation, it’s important to know what is available and if it ticks all of your boxes. Consider the following when selecting your SPF:

• Consider quality sunscreen: Always ensure your sunscreen label says “broad Spectrum” or covers UVA (ageing) & UVB (burning). Look for SPF 30 or higher. Also look for ones that are water-resistant, meaning it will stay on wet skin for up to 40 minutes.

• Consider skin type: If you have oily or spot prone skin use a sunscreen which is oil free or (noncomedogenic) non-spot forming and will have a matte finish. If you have dry skin, choose a hydrating sunscreen with hyaluronic acid or ceramides.

• Consider skin tone: If you have a medium to dark complexion chemical sunscreens (which are absorbed into the skin) may appear more clear, while mineral or physical sunscreens (which sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays) may leave some white cast.

• Apply it last: Generally speaking sunscreen should be applied to freshly cleansed skin. This should be the last step of your morning skincare so after skin serums and before applying makeup.

What are my some of my favourite examples out there for various skin types and various budgets?

On Wednesday evening Ballymena Chamber of Commerce and Industry held its annual AGM at Galgorm Resort. At the AGM Leigh Heggarty, Galgorm Collection's Business Development Manager was elected as the new President of the Chamber.

In his speech the outgoing President, Councillor Eugene Reid said how honoured he had been to have served as Chamber President for the preceding two years. Eugene said ‘The last two years have been some of the most difficult for our communities and our businesses. These have been unprecedented times and as a Chamber we had to adopt new practices to meet the challenges posed by the pandemic. I must also say that our businesses have shown remarkable resilience and our local economy remains strong a testament to the strength of our local entrepreneurs’. Eugene then went on to thank the members of the Management Committee who had given up their free time to attend meetings and provide as much support as they could to Chamber members. Eugene went on to say, ‘Leigh Heggarty has extensive business knowledge accompanied by a great deal of common sense – I know Leigh will be an excellent President and it is my honour to formally propose that Leigh becomes the next President of Ballymena Chamber’ This proposal was passed unanimously by those attending the meeting.

In her acceptance address Leigh said ‘It is an honour to be elected as President of Ballymena Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry’ Leigh thanked Eugene for his leadership during such a difficult period and she knew that he had given up a considerable amount of time to not only lead Chamber but to ensure Chamber’s members received support during the crisis created by the pandemic. 

The new President continued ‘Born and bred in Ballymena my passions are business and tourism and I’m very fortunate that my career path has afforded me the opportunity to pursue both.

Ballymena has always punched well above its weight in terms of business. The manufacturing heartland and market town has consistently showed its resilience and determination to succeed. Wrighbus now owned by Jo Bamford continues to expand into new areas throughout the world, creating more local jobs. 

Galgorm Resort have invested heavily to establish the Resort as an award-winning international and world-class tourism destination, remaining firmly focused on investment and innovation attracting major events such as the Irish Open and ISPS Handa Golf events to the borough. Leigh then proposed Mark Wiggins, Power NI, as her Vice President and this was also unanimously passed by the attendees. Mark stated ‘It is a privilege to take on this new role. I know we have a Management Committee who are committed to working hard to support and grow business in the area and I look forward to working with Leigh and the Committee to drive Chamber and ensure our members are at the heart of the economic recovery as we exit the worst excesses of this pandemic’

The meeting closed and attendees were given the opportunity to chat over coffee and tea and to liaise with the President and members of the Committee. This is the first in a series of events being organised by the Chamber in 2022 which will include a range of business breakfasts together with its two showpiece events – The Charity Golf Day in aid of the NI Hospice and Children’s Hospice (which raised £25,000 in 2021) and The Ballymena Business Excellence Awards.

I hope I have answered some of your questions and I cannot recommend enough to try at least one product, you will be hooked!

What can vitamin C do for our skin?

Vitamin C works as an antioxidant, so in simple terms, an antioxidant helps to prevent or reduce damage to our cells. Application of Vitamin C to the skin helps to keep it healthy and glowing!

Are there different types of vitamin C?

There are 6 types so something for everyone!

• Ascorbic Acid - this is the most effective form of Vitamin C to penetrate the skin.
• Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate - this is a little different as when you apply the product to the skin it then converts to Ascorbic Acid thus making it less active however this will make it less irritating
• Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate -  this would be the most hydrating and soothing of them all so particularly good for sensitive skin
• Sodium Ascorbate - this falls under mineral salts so and this form is the sodium salt of ascorbic acid, it also converts to this when applied to the skin so again this is a lot gentler
• Calcium Ascorbate - this helps the skin to heal and helps with fine lines and age spots
• Ascorbyl Palmitate - this is both boosting and brightening, this is non-irritating so excellent for those skins that need a little bit of soothing

Is it an active ingredient - how should it be kept and is there a shelf life to it? Will it lose its potency?

It is indeed an active ingredient so should be stored correctly to ensure you get the very best from its brilliance – buy if you can in a dark glass bottle and store in a cool room, always double-check that the lid is on correctly…. It is too good to waste!

How do I apply the products – I’ve heard it’s thin to thick?

Indeed, the rule of thumb is thinnest product to thickest so if applying Vitamin C Serum apply your moisturiser afterwards.

Should I apply vitamin C once or twice a day?

In general vitamin C products should be applied in the morning before heading out for the day, when UV radiation is at its highest however always, always, always add an SPF in all seasons, just because you can’t see the sun doesn’t mean it isn’t getting through to the skin so don’t waste all that hard work of looking after your skin and then not protecting!

Can any skin type get the benefits – should any skin type be cautious?

If you are hyper-sensitive you may have a mild reaction to Vitamin C, however, there are four ingredients you should not mix with Vitamin C

• Benzoyl peroxide is used as a treatment for mild to moderate acne, when combined this will actually oxidize the Vitamin C
• Retinoids contain anti-ageing compounds that help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and boost collagen production. Combining retinol with Vitamin C is a recipe for peeling, redness, and irritation. If you do want to use retinol it is best to use the Vitamin C in the morning and Retinol at night (an SPF is a MUST for use of Retinol)
• Niacinamide takes out all the good properties of Vitamin C and makes it into a substance that can cause redness and trigger breakouts.
• Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are chemical exfoliants that can totally transform your skin game, they are all acidic ingredients so may irritate the skin so it would be best to alternate between them and Vitamin C

Are there any side effects when using it?

Some people may experience, itching, tingling when applying, redness, or mild skin irritation. If you do remove straight and leave for a few days, stay away from anything else with active ingredients using perhaps a gentle cleanser or moisturiser

What’s the easiest way to incorporate it?

I would apply a small amount of Vitamin C Serum to cleansed skin in the morning followed by your SPF to see how your skin feels

Is it like retinol where you need to build up a tolerance?

I would recommend starting off in the morning and if no irritation start to introduce in the evening if you do have hyper-sensitive skin perhaps start with every other day and see how your skin reacts

Should I use SPF after using products with vitamin C?

Vitamin C helps to fight free radicals so applying another layer of SPF will ensure your skin is protected and will help with the visible signs of ageing….. keep those wrinkles away! Why do we need to use a broad-spectrum SPF daily in our skin routine?

Did you know that 90% of skin aging comes from the UV rays of the sun? Exposure to the sun causes premature skin aging. The sun contains powerful UVA (responsible for ageing) and UVB (responsible for skin burning) rays that reach deep into our skin and start to break down our cell processes, meaning our skin begins to change and age rapidly. These rays are around all day, all year round, regardless of the weather outside, so do not be fooled by the rain or the cloud. The Sun’s rays penetrate through all elements to reach the earth’s surface, therefore reaching us. By protecting our skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen, your skin will receive protection from both the UVA and UVB rays, allowing it to function properly and also ensuring those lovely products that we apply everyday are getting the optimum chance within the skin as they do not get broken down by the UV rays.

Is SPF in makeup enough?

SPF that is within our makeup, is a bonus to us, but alone, it is not enough!

The beauty industry is overflowing with products such as foundations and primers that contain SPF, however they really are not enough to protect the skin from damage. Something important to know and remember is that the term ‘SPF’ only refers to protection from UVB rays, we know that the SPF within makeup will help to protect us against burning, yes! However, there is no UVA protection present from the makeup. UVA rays are our ageing rays and they reach into the deeper layers of the skin where our cell function is. If we alter or damage our skin cell function, we are going to end up with poorly performing skin.

What is the difference in mineral and chemical SPF?

A chemical sunscreen acts like a sponge, absorbing the rays, which can sometimes be a little too much for a sensitive skin as it can tend to heat the skin up slightly. Whereas, a mineral sunscreen reflects the sun’s rays away from the skin.

Can my laptop and other electronic devices damage my skin?

Another important point to take into consideration are the infra-red rays that our skin is exposed to daily. We don’t usually think about these, but at the end of the day, this is still light on the skin.  Infra-red light actually reaches deeper into the skin than UV rays. Like UVA rays, it also reaches down into the dermal layer of the skin where wrinkles are formed and causes extensive collagen and elastin breakdown.  These harmful rays come from all our electronic devices, such as laptops and phones.

Zoe’s favourite Broad Spectrum SPF

My favourite SPF to use is the Ultra Facial Defence SPF 50, by SkinCeuticals. This product protects against UVA and UVB rays in an ultra-light lotion, which is moisturising to the skin and easily absorbed.

What is an antioxidant and why do I need one?

SPF may help fight the effects of the sun’s rays, however and SPF won’t fight off other aggressors of the environment around us. An antioxidant is the ultimate protecting from free radicals and environmental stress. Our bodies naturally produce free radicals, but they can also come from exposure to environmental factors like UV rays, pollution, cigarette smoke and other chemicals. With the use of an antioxidant in our skincare routine we can fight the effects of free radical damage and oxidative stress.

If you’ve ever seen a sliced apple turn brown, you’ve witnessed the process of oxidation, which is caused by free radicals. Imagine what is happening inside our skin, this is why it is important to use an antioxidant to fight this oxidisation.

How often and when do I use one an antioxidant?

You should use your antioxidant every morning. We do not need to use on at night time as we are usually pressing pause on our day, resting in bed where we are not surrounded my environmental aggressors.

Apply in the morning, after your cleansing routine, before you apply any other serums, moisturisers and SPF.

Zoe’s favourite antioxidant

Vitamin C is one of the most studied antioxidants in the industry. Dr Sheldon Pinnell, the founder of SkinCeuticals devoted 10 years of his dermatology research into the effects and benefits that Vitamin C has on the skin. One of the most important and well-known circadian rhythms is the sleep-wake cycle. Your circadian rhythm helps control your daily schedule for sleep and wakefulness.

In order to achieve a quiet mind and a relaxed body, it is helpful to establish a regular, relaxing, bedtime routine. You need to put the cares and worries of the day to bed a long before you get into bed.

Routine

A bedtime routine signals to the body that it is time for sleep. You should endeavour to spend at least 30 minutes winding down before bed.

For the best chance to sleep well, you should follow a ritual to relax both the body and mind. Our work with Dr Tara Swart, a doctor of neuroscience and Senior Lecturer at MIT, suggests that adopting an aromatherapy ritual will rewire the brain to associate that time, smell and practice with a specific feeling.

Start with clearing your thoughts and let the body rest, soaking in a warm bath. Slow down by pouring one capful of Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil into hands to warm the oil. This begs the question; how can we get achieve skin equilibrium this Winter? Well, this has always been a big task as we constantly move from the outdoors to indoors and not to mention the central heating, wind chills and rain we have to contend with. While it may seem daunting, we can turn this around with the right products and skincare regime to target problem skin concerns.  

The first rule is not to overcomplicate things. Skincare routines should first and foremost be simple and easy to follow. Sometimes we’re told to use 10 different creams depending on the time of day and how many times a week which can get very confusing. Retinol is the word on every beauty-obsessive’s lips but, what exactly is it I hear you ask? Retinol is a type of retinoid that can help to treat skin concerns, improve overall skin texture and appearance by increasing the rate of skin cells turnover. It is the perfect product to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (we love it!). Winter is the perfect season to introduce a retinol into your skincare regime as there is less sunshine which in turn gives your skin it’s much-needed time to heal itself. First Minister Arlene Foster welcomes Galgorm's newest tourism investment as guests are safely welcomed back.

Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa destination, Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort, has unveiled its new, dramatically enhanced Thermal Village and Spa provision, representing an investment of more than £2 million into the popular Resort’s tourism credentials.

Work on the expansion project commenced in March this year after closing its doors in line with government safety restrictions.

The newly-reopened Resort now boasts a suite of new attractions for spa guests, including a 10 metre infinity pool on the shores of the River Maine, a 200m2 Palm House relaxation area encompassing six heated loungers, and a brand new Salt Room for halotherapy experiences.

With over 90 per cent of its Thermal Village and Spa offering located outdoors, Galgorm has also installed two group hot tubs and saunas, three additional private hot tubs with waterfall views and six brand new riverside cabanas.

First Minister, Arlene Foster, welcomed Galgorm’s return and its continued tourism investment:

The new Spa expansion project is the latest venture in Galgorm’s investment into the Resort. Over the last decade, the premier estate has undergone a £60 million transformation and there are further plans to invest an additional £20 million by 2025.

Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort has officially opened its doors to the Resort's newly refurbished entertainment offering, McKendry's Lounge Bar.

Formerly known as Gillies Bar & Grill, McKendry's is now a whiskey lover's haven, boasting an encyclopedic whiskey collection of over 300 blends from 21 countries, including a coveted limited-edition bottle of the most expensive Irish whiskey ever produced, "The Chosen".

The new whiskey lounge/bar reflects the warm ambience and atmosphere of an eclectic Irish pub and draws on its local heritage, harking back to the much-loved McKendry's bar of a bygone era, which served the local community from its premises in Broughshane Street, Ballymena before closing its doors.

Galgorm Spa and Golf Resort today launched its first premium own-label gin, developed in partnership with Northern Ireland’s newest artisan gin producer, Copeland Distillery.

Using botanicals harvested from Galgorm Estate for an authentic local taste, Galgorm Estate Gin is the resort’s first house spirit.

It’s also the latest addition to its extensive gin menu, widely regarded as one of the most exclusive menus across the island of Ireland.

Launching from Friday 29 November, Galgorm Estate Gin is available within the Resort and across the Galgorm Collection Portfolio, including

Commenting on the partnership, Colin Johnston, Galgorm Collection Managing Director, said;
