For the past ten out of twelve years, we’ve been to Galgorm for Christmas.

Winter Wonderland is our family tradition!

Post-Christmas, when you catch up with friends and colleagues after the break, the general consensus is that whilst they had a good time, it was stressful in one way or another.

Most families have their own traditions, but usually the build-up to Christmas poses, for most, a multitude of different questions—some good, some possibly not so good. Add into the mix children wanting their independence, and a common reply becomes: “Do we have to?”

For us, as a family and with our extended family, it’s simple—we go to Galgorm for Christmas. 

We have four children: the eldest is 12, twins are 10, and the youngest is nine.

For the past ten out of twelve years, we’ve been to Galgorm for Winter Wonderland, it's our family tradition. On the two occasions we’ve missed (and I can assure you, the backlash from young and old was not polite!), it was due to childbirth or the ill health of an elderly relative.

We go for three days—we arrive on Christmas Eve and check out on Boxing Day. Not only do we check out on Boxing Day, we also book for the following year!

From the second we arrive to the minute we leave, it’s simply magical. It’s something that neither young nor old would ever want to miss. The staff are amazing, the hotel is stunning, the ambience is magical, the food is wow—and just for three days, I start to believe.

The main question over the years from people who haven’t stayed there is: “Does Santa visit?”

Not only does he visit, but we see him on Christmas morning after taking the train down to meet him!

To try and convey to people how good it is, they genuinely don’t believe us—so here is a summary of our tradition:

• Arrival (Christmas Eve): After being welcomed by the staff and checking in, our bags are whisked away to our room. As a family group, we meet in McKendry's Bar for a catch-up and a drink around one of the open fires.

• Afternoon Tea: Once everyone has arrived, we make our way to afternoon tea, which is simply wow.

• Swim & Room Magic: After afternoon tea, with the clan fed and watered, we visit the magnificant Thermal Spa Village and then back to our room. When we arrive, the Christmas tree lights are twinkling, and a selection of treats awaits. Over the years, these have included reindeer shortbread with everyone’s names iced on them!

• Christmas Eve Dinner: A sumptuous affair, with a choice of restaurants, where the festive spirit continues. Then, it’s off to bed—because the big fella is due. Returning to our room, we find the beds turned down, a glass of milk for Santa, carrots for the reindeer, and sparkly glitter so they know where to land!

• Christmas Morning: He’s been! Presents everywhere! A stocking on our door, and breakfast awaits, with an immense choice topped off with a complimentary glass of champagne—it is Christmas, after all!

• Santa Express: We take the Santa Express to visit the big fella, receive outstanding gifts, and have our annual photo with the man himself. Then it’s back to the hotel for another thrip to the spa for one and all.

• Christmas Lunch: Incredible! As we gather after lunch for another drink somewhere in the hotel, everyone insists they couldn’t eat again for a week. Meanwhile, the children are whisked off to the VIP screening of a film in the Rolls Royce, while we adults sit back and relax. Shortly after, the kids return with pick ’n’ mix galore—strangely, mostly eaten by the adults!

• Christmas Night Buffet: A buffet dinner which nobody claimed earlier they could eat—but everyone does! We socialise with the other guests and, on the odd occasion, even enjoy a sing-song.

• Boxing Day: Reluctantly, we depart.

Do we believe? For three days, I do. I simply cannot explain how good it is—the atmosphere, the staff, the food, the activities, and just pure fun. Stunning. Simply stunning!

New links course at Bellarena will cement Northern Ireland’s global reputation as a world class golfing destination

Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hospitality group Galgorm Collection today unveiled plans to invest more than £30 million to create a new, landmark links golf course at Bellarena on the region’s stunning north west coast.

The company, which owns and runs the championship parkland course at Galgorm Castle in Ballymena and the wonderfully scenic Roe Valley course in Limavady, said its plans would create the first championship links course in Northern Ireland in over 100 years and help to cement the region’s reputation as a world class golfing destination.

Home to 2025 Masters champion and Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy, Northern Ireland is already a renowned location for some of the world’s most iconic golf courses, and this month plays host to The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

Galgorm said its plans to develop a new 18-hole links course at Bellarena – located between Portrush and Limavady within the stunning Causeway Coast and Glens area around 30 minutes’ drive from the City of Derry and its adjacent airport – will help create new local jobs and act as a major catalyst for further tourism investment in the north west.

Subject to planning approval, Galgorm Collection said development of Bellarena Golf Links will start next year and open in 2029, bringing its total investment in the north west to around £65 million and an additional 300 jobs created.

Last year, the group acquired the nearby Roe Park Resort in Limavady and Galgorm Castle Estate in Ballymena as part of a landmark £50 million investment. It is currently investing a further £22 million in the now newly-named Roe Valley Resort and its own award-winning 18-hole golf course.

Research conducted by Sporting Insights for Tourism Northern Ireland’s annual Golf Tourism Monitor last year showed the golfing sector’s value had risen by almost 66 percent since 2019, when The 148th Open was held at Royal Portrush. Its value has also more than doubled in the past decade, from £33.2 million in 2014. On average, golfers spend around nine days on their visit to Northern Ireland, playing five rounds on different courses during their stay.

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald, said:

“Golf tourism generated a record £86 million for the region last year and this month’s Open at Royal Portrush will help to increase this impact even further. I commend the Galgorm Collection team for their confidence and ambition in supporting our drive to amplify the regional prosperity which the sport can bring.”

At the forefront of the region’s tourism growth, Galgorm Collection has invested around £120 million in less than two decades and currently employs a team of more than 1,400.

Bellarena – derived from the French word for ‘beautiful’ and Latin for ‘sand’ – is a small townland on the coastal road between Limavady and Coleraine within the Causeway Coast and Glens District Council area and is located close to the main railway line between Belfast and Derry.

Black Desert NI Legends to take centre stage at Galgorm in milestone 20th professional tournament. 

Galgorm is set to welcome some of the most iconic names in golf as it hosts the Black Desert NI Legends from 29–31 August 2025, marking a historic milestone as the 20th professional tournament held at the venue.

Former Masters champion, Ryder Cup stalwart and World No.1 Ian Woosnam headlines a field that includes Major champions, Ryder Cup players and Tour winners, and the Welshman was excited by the prospect of competing on the island of Ireland once again – the scene, of course, of his memorable winning captaincy at the 2006 Ryder Cup.

At the event’s official launch at Galgorm, Woosnam said:

The Championship Castle Course at Galgorm measures 7,276 yards from the championship tees and is a former Parkland Course of the Year winner at the annual IGTOA awards (Irish Golf Tour Operator Association).

Formerly known as the European Senior Tour and the Staysure Tour, the Legends Tour is the men’s professional golf tour for members aged 50 and older. Created in 1992, the Legends Tour's active membership features many of the pioneering champions who played on the European Tour including Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal, Ian Woosnam, Michael Campbell, Paul Lawrie, Paul McGinley and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

The Legends Tour provides unmatched playing experiences for amateur golfers at its Legends Experience, Championship Pro-Am and Celebrity Pro-Am events, giving golfers unique opportunities to rub shoulders with and play alongside legends of the game at world-class venues around the world.

The tournament will take place from Friday 29th August to Sunday 31st August.

Golf tourism’s newest showpiece event Elevate Golf is to be held on the Emerald Isle for the very first time in 2026 as the industry’s biggest names are welcomed to the great golfing country of Northern Ireland.

Held between October 25 and October 30 next year, Elevate Golf 2026 will see the finest golf courses, resorts and accommodation providers connect with high-class international tour operators during tailor-made appointments, and in more casual surroundings on the golf course and at evening receptions.

This combined spend, which includes acquisition costs and a multimillion-pound transformation plan for both properties, represents one of the region’s largest investments in Northern Ireland’s hospitality sector and underlines Galgorm Collection’s position as the leading provider of luxury hospitality in the region.

Galgorm Collection, which owns a suite of leading properties including the iconic Galgorm, The Rabbit Hotel and Retreat, and The Old Inn, acquired the historic, internationally renowned Galgorm Castle Estate in Ballymena and the four-star Roe Park Resort & Spa, set in in a magnificent countryside estate in Limavady, for a combined £28 million.

With a rich history dating back to 1614 The Old Inn is primed for a new chapter of growth with Galgorm Collection at its helm.

Since acquiring the property in April last year, Galgorm Collection, which owns the world-renowned Galgorm and a number of other properties across Belfast and Antrim, has already invested more than £1 million in refurbishing the property to its exacting, first-class standards.

This has included revamping its cosy 1614 bar and refurbishing its 120-seater Old Inn restaurant which offers diners a brand new menu that marries homely classics with modern dining, featuring French-inspired dishes, seafood and salads.

Galgorm Collection is also upgrading all 32 guestrooms as part of plans to revitalise and upgrade the historic destination, in line with other Collection properties.

Individually styled and luxuriously appointed, The Old Inn offers five room types - petite, carriage, highway, junior suite and suite – with some of its premier room offerings already refreshed.

The Old Inn Suite now boasts its own private balcony complete with outdoor hot tub overlooking the Treetop Spa whilst the first of its Junior Suites also completed a makeover to include

bespoke finishing touches including a free-standing copper bath to complement the chic French-inspired furniture.

The property’s premier cottage accommodation set within the hotel’s grounds – and famed for being the honeymoon spot of world-famous local author C.S. Lewis – now comes complete with its own secluded outdoor hot tub for the ultimate tranquil forest bathing experience.

Plans to reimagine the hotel’s private dining space are also in progress, with refurbishment expected to be complete by early 2023.

Summer is on the way and whether you’re opting for a staycation close to home or dreaming of sun-soaked holidays to far flung locations, it’s time to consider your summer skincare regime. You’re probably thinking of switching up your moisturisers for the season, but have you thought about your daily SPF? Doctors, dermatologists, and aesthetic practitioners are always talking about how crucial sunscreen is, but do you know what to look out for?

Why should we wear any sunscreen/SPF?

We all take pride in our skin, spending money on products to keep us looking radiant and healthy, however we can often fall foul of overlooking the importance of daily SPF, a key pillar in our skincare regime. Often anti-ageing is our number one concern, but your priority should always be to prevent sunburn, which can increase the risk of skin cancer. Another very important reason should be to protect the skin from the harmful UV rays that cause premature ageing and wrinkles. I ask clients to see it as an insurance to protect their investment in their skin. If you are investing in anti-wrinkle/dermal fillers or micro needling treatments, it is imperative that you protect your investment from being undone by the harmful effects caused by UV rays.

What you should be looking for in an SPF:

The label on your facial sunscreen should read “Broad Spectrum”. This guards you against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

• UVA (95% of Sun’s UV rays) causes immediate tanning and sunburn. In the long-term this can result in premature ageing, wrinkles, and an increase in the risk of some skin cancers.

• UVB (5% of Sun’s UV rays) causes delayed tanning sunburn and blistering. Long-term results can include an increase in the risk of skin cancer and premature ageing. Many sunscreens only protect against UVB leaving your skin unprotected against 95% of the sun’s rays, so always look out for Broad Spectrum SPF.

Expectation VS Reality

Traditionally the word sunscreen would conjure up images of thick, gloopy, sticky creams that sit on the skin, resulting in blocked pores, spots and preventing you from wearing makeup. Not to mention ruining your holiday wardrobe staples. Luckily this is no longer the case with experts developing modern sunscreen solutions suitable for all skin types. Options now include moisturisers for the skin complete with UVA & UVB protection, with some even containing antioxidants or skin brightening botanicals for a double boost to your skin. Check the labels on your favourite makeup products as many now include SPF in their formulation, including mineral powders.

Choosing the perfect SPF for you

As with all skincare, products are personal to you and your skin type and SPF is no different. With many options available depending on budget and formulation, it’s important to know what is available and if it ticks all of your boxes. Consider the following when selecting your SPF:

• Consider quality sunscreen: Always ensure your sunscreen label says “broad Spectrum” or covers UVA (ageing) & UVB (burning). Look for SPF 30 or higher. Also look for ones that are water-resistant, meaning it will stay on wet skin for up to 40 minutes.

• Consider skin type: If you have oily or spot prone skin use a sunscreen which is oil free or (noncomedogenic) non-spot forming and will have a matte finish. If you have dry skin, choose a hydrating sunscreen with hyaluronic acid or ceramides.

• Consider skin tone: If you have a medium to dark complexion chemical sunscreens (which are absorbed into the skin) may appear more clear, while mineral or physical sunscreens (which sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays) may leave some white cast.

• Apply it last: Generally speaking sunscreen should be applied to freshly cleansed skin. This should be the last step of your morning skincare so after skin serums and before applying makeup.

Galgorm Collection donates £7,000 to support Access Employment Limited (AEL) following damage from Storm Éowyn

As part of its continued commitment to supporting local communities, Galgorm Collection has donated £7,000 worth of funding for Access Employment Limited (AEL), a Larne-based social enterprise that provides training, employment, and social opportunities for people aged 16 to 60 with learning difficulties, health conditions, and social disadvantages.

The leading hospitality group’s donation will directly support AEL in repairing the damage caused by Storm Éowyn to the poly-tunnels in Naggy Burn Garden Centre, a vital resource for AEL’s horticulture training program. These poly-tunnels allow service users to develop skills in gardening and help them to supply fresh ingredients to AEL’s Lunchbox Café at Larne Community Hub.

AEL offers a diverse range of training and employment opportunities, including horticulture, catering, production, online retail, and packaging experience - all designed to help service users gain workplace experience and qualifications.

Aaron Doherty, AEL Garden Centre Manager, said:

“We can’t thank Galgorm Collection enough for their kind donation to help us recover from the damage caused by Storm Éowyn. Amongst breakages and damages, we unfortunately had to witness the polythene cover on one of our main growing tunnels being torn from its frame. We also sustained significant damage to a second tunnel too.

“Our poly-tunnels not only offer protected cover to allow our plants to grow but for our trainees to work in, immerse themselves in gardening and help grow the fresh fruit and vegetables which supply our Lunchbox Café, restaurants in the Larne area, and local residents.

“This damage is a major setback for our trainees as they’ve been steadily potting and preparing new stock for Spring. However, we won’t let this dampen our spirits.

“76% of our income comes from commercial activity generated from our social enterprises, such as our Lunchbox Café, and 100% of our profits generated are reinvested back into the organisation. Galgorm Collection’s donation ensures that our resources remain focused on training and supporting our trainees and the community rather than repair costs.”

AEL operates several social enterprises for their trainees to get involved in, including Create Gifts, which gives trainees the chance to create branded merchandise and unique, personalised gifts.

Groundbreaking partnership secured with Galgorm to locate state-of-the-art football centre in Ballymena

The Irish Football Association today confirmed details of its plans to create a new state-of-the-art, multi-million pound National Football Centre as part of a significant strategic investment which will inspire a new generation to reach their full potential.

Located on a 50-acre site opposite the renowned Galgorm near Ballymena, the new facility expects to feature world-class pitches and cutting-edge training facilities, fully realising the association’s ambition to create a project that will become the beating heart of Northern Ireland’s football community, supporting both elite and grassroots players.

A range of potential opportunities were explored across the country and, following a comprehensive review of all the options, Galgorm was chosen as the most compelling, best-fit opportunity to develop the facility.

Confirmation of the plans represent the Irish FA’s long-standing strategic priority to create a facility that will nurture elite talent, support youth development and bolster team performance. It is also designed to serve Northern Ireland’s international squads whilst aiming to support the charitable and community activities of the Irish FA Foundation, and marks a bold investment in the future of the game.

Irish FA President Conrad Kirkwood underscored the project’s far-reaching impact: 

He said: "Realising this project will significantly benefit our teams and players, creating an impressive football campus and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.

“We anticipate the National Football Centre being a bespoke, world-class facility with a distinct Northern Ireland identity, serving players of all ages, both male and female, while also benefiting the local community and grassroots football.”

The project has also received resounding support from Northern Ireland’s senior international managers.

With the design phase under way, the Irish FA is working to secure statutory permissions and initiate procurement and construction. It is anticipated that the centre will open its doors in 2028, marking a pivotal moment in Northern Ireland’s football legacy.

Northern Ireland’s premiere luxury hotel, Galgorm has added a stunning new range of accommodation to its collection, with a £3 million investment.

Having already invested £60 million since 2010, Galgorm secured its position among the world’s premier tourism destinations in 2021 when it announced a further £30 million investment to expand and enhance its resort and spa facilities by 2027.

The new Forest Dens represent £3 million of that investment phase and are the first element of the ‘Forest Garden’ at Galgorm. The expansion to the Thermal Spa Village is due to follow in summer 2025, complete with forest walks, wood-fired sauna, hot tubs and a rope bridge connecting the Thermal Spa Village on both sides of the river.

The fabulous new ‘Forest Dens’ are tucked away beyond the river Maine in the peaceful heart of Galgorm Wood, each one complete with a beautifully bohemian backyard for the chance to get back to nature and soak up some serious tranquility.

Guests will be invited to relax in their own private sauna, unwind with a wood-fired bath and freshen up in the outdoor shower for a truly rejuvenating break from the bustle.

Other features include a stylish indoor kitchenette, outdoor seating with heating, BBQ facilities and a fire pit.

Where earthy nature meets that famous Galgorm luxury, the new Forest Dens, set within 40-acres of private forest, are the latest addition to the resort’s exquisite accommodation offering which includes 125 luxurious guestrooms, 41 cottage suites, 16 Shepherd’s Huts, six log cabins and four exclusive residences.

Suitable for two guests, with one double bed, ensuite with shower and Galgorm Cora amenities, a Forest Den stay includes access to the spectacular Thermal Spa Village from check-in to check-out, helping to bring guests’ sense of Zen to the next level as they embrace true comfort and explore the great outdoors in the Galgorm changing robes and sliders.

All of Galgorm’s lodging accommodations are dog-friendly, so guests are also invited to bring their pooches along for a visit.

Just 30 minutes from Belfast, and two and a half hours from Dublin, Galgorm is set within 450 acres of parkland next to the river Maine in the heart of Co Antrim.
