Jade's Tips for Autumn Skincare | Replenish & Protect
Think of autumn as your opportune moment to prepare for the harsh elements of winter. It is your chance to reanalyse your skin care routine and ensure you are doing everything you can to prepare for the chillier months.
Staying hydrated is the key to beautiful skin all year round, not just for winter! The skin is our largest organ and in order for our organs to function properly, they need water to protect and repair appropriately, which is precisely what we need for our skin during the colder seasons.
Re-analyse your skin;
When the seasons change, you may notice your skin type changes as well. This is the time where some with oily skin might notice their skin turns a bit normal, or those with normal skin might consider their skin is suddenly dry.
Watch your skin as the weather turns cold to see if you need to change up your skin care products and switch them accordingly. If you aren't sure whether your skin needs a new regime, you could always visit The Spa at Galgorm and chat to us and we would be happy to discuss your personal skin care needs. We offer an entirely prescriptive facial which includes a thorough consultation and skin analysis to check for sun damage, pigmentation, dryness, de hydration, and excess oil. Helping the therapist determine the best products for your facial and for home use.
Top Tip - Try an oil-based scrub;
If during the summer you have indulged in too much sun worshipping your skins going to need plenty of exfoliation! However exfoliation can be a harsh process if the skin is damaged in any way, so after exposure to the sun, it's best to use an oil based scrub, so you get all the benefits of a polish whilst also replenishing any lost oils in the skin! Effervescence from Voya is a beautiful seaweed and sugar scrub which exfoliates the body whilst the dual milk formula helps to nourish with a blend of essential oils and seaweed. Leaves the skin silky smooth and revived.
Face oils have been around for a long time, but I find when chatting to clients that there is a stigma attached to face oils that they really don’t deserve! Some people believe the oil will cause the skin to become overly stimulated and leave their faces shiny and unpleasant; some don’t like the feeling of the oil on the face, and others don’t know how to use them effectively.
If used correctly, however, facial oils can be incredibly effective at replenishing lost moisture in the skin and helping our moisturiser reach down further, thus leaving us with beautiful, luminous complexions, which we couldn’t achieve with moisturiser alone. The fatty acids contained in face oils penetrate deeper into the skin, letting our follow up products enter further into the epidermis and nourish from the inside out for a truly deeply enriching effect!
I use My Little Hero from Voya; the therapists at Galgorm refer to it as ‘liquid gold’ because of its luxurious properties and beautiful effects on the skin. You only need a very small amount and it doesn’t leave a sticky residue on the skin, which I and my clients love! It’s also incredible for anyone with an oily skin type; our skins protective barrier can be stripped away and badly affected due to hormonal changes, the environment, using the wrong products and over stimulating the skin. This can cause an excess of oil on the surface of the skin because our skin is in such a severe drought it starts to produce more and more oils, in order to rebalance the skin we need to rehydrate, your skin is smart enough to only absorb what it needs, and you only need a very small amount, making it a fantastic product for oil regulation.
Half a pump on your fingertips is enough, and it can be patted gently onto the skin, followed by moisturiser and eye cream.
Our winter skin is generally speaking paler than our summer skin; it’s also exposed to much more extreme conditions and can become drier and more vulnerable, it is, therefore, more important than ever to be wearing an SPF! It may seem silly to wear an SPF during the colder months, but your skin will thank you for it, and of course it is only necessary on exposed areas, during the winter this may just be our hands, neck and face. Sun damage can happen all year round, and we want to avoid this as much as possible, not only for health reasons but the sun is to blame for 80% of wrinkles! Yikes! Makeup formulations in modern times are much more beneficial for our skin than in years gone by and most foundations now carry an SPF of around 15 and sometimes even more which is great and exactly what we want; to create a barrier from the sun! To further protect my skin, I use Maskerade as mentioned before as a hydrating primer and to help my makeup stay in place, it works fantastically and results in great make-up days! I then follow with Me Time, our collagen boosting, organic seaweed based moisturiser to prevent the skin from further damage, encourage cell renewal and provide long term moisture, everything you want for an anti-aging, protective product.
