Meet Dr. Andrew Mottram

1). Tell us a little about yourself?

I have been working as a Doctor for the last 19 years after graduating from Queen’s University Belfast back in 2002.  I developed a love for dermatology and everything skin related exactly 20 years ago when I travelled to Australia for the 1st time as a final year medical student for a 3-month elective in Dermatology.  This really inspired me to keep dermatology as a special interest.

After graduation, I spent 7 years training in many different specialities such as General Medicine, Surgery, Aesthetics and Intensive Care, Cardiology, Accident and Emergency, Paediatrics, Obs & Gynae before completing my training as a General Practitioner in 2009.

Given my experience and training, I was able to provide regular skin clinics and minor surgery clinics while working locally as a GP since 2009.

In 2013 I was given the opportunity to follow my dreams and move to Australia where I spent 3 years training and performing skin cancer surgery.  It was also here that I developed my love for Aesthetic medicine.  I travelled to Melbourne to begin studying with the world-leading experts from the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. During this period, I gained a certificate and later completed a post-graduate diploma in Aesthetic Medicine.

Homesickness brought us back from our Australian dreams however we are delighted to be back in sunny Northern Ireland, and I am tremendously excited to bring all my training and skills to the wonderful Galgorm.

2). What Inspired you to begin a career in aesthetics?

I had always loved dermatology and during my time performing skin cancer surgery I really wanted to know more about how I could improve people’s post-operative scarring, severe acne scarring and pigmentation. I had some experience of lasers on various attachments in dermatology, but I really wanted to jump into this and get more experience and training.

A wonderful colleague had told me about a course in Melbourne where you spend week-long sessions alongside the world’s leading experts getting hands-on experience with all the latest lasers, IPL machines and begin to study everything aesthetic related.

This is where my journey began in aesthetics some 7 years ago.  It’s a very exciting field and always full of new developments so I never stop training. I’m always striving for improvements and expanding my collection of treatments.

It’s not like work to me I just love it.

3). What is your area of specialisation?

I am an Aesthetic Physician and a (GPES) GP with enhanced skills in Dermatology & Dermatosurgery (Skin Surgery).

Alongside working in my Aesthetic clinic, I currently work for the NHS as a GPES in Dermatology & Dermatosurgery (Skin Surgery) and as an Urgent Care Doctor providing Out of Hours care.

With 12 years of experience performing minor surgery and joint injections combined with 3 years performing skin cancer surgery I am delighted to offer mole checks/ skin cancer assessments (using a dermatoscope) and a full range of minor surgery procedures from Skin Biopsies, Mole/Lump/Cyst/Lipoma removals, down to Skin Tags, Age Spots, Thread Veins, Warts and Verrucas.  Even ingrown toenail surgical treatment & cautery for nosebleeds to name a few.

Alongside all of this I am delighted to provide the full range of joint and soft tissue injections from Frozen Shoulder to Tennis/Golfer’s elbow, Carpal Tunnel, Wrist, Thumb, Trigger fingers, Hip bursitis, Knee, Achilles tendonitis, Morton’s neuromas of toes and Plantar Fascitis.

My GPES role in Dermatology and my experience in the speciality of Aesthetic Medicine enables me to provide assessment and treatment of many of the common Dermatology problems faced by so many.  Some of the most treated problems include Acne, Rosacea, Eczema, Psoriasis, pigmentation and scar reduction.

Treatments may involve Prescription-strength medications, microdermabrasion, Peels, LED light therapy, Micro-needling, cryotherapy, electrosurgery and many more to come…

4). What products do you use and why?

I feel it is important as an experienced injector to have experience in using a variety of different products.

Regarding Skincare regimes, I worked with Image Skin Care in Australia and was very impressed.  They have a great range whether it is for acne, for excessive pigment or anti-ageing. I really love their new plant stem cell “Max” collection and their Image MD Doctor only range.

I personally love their SPF range of sunscreen (arguably the most important cream in my opinion).  There is no thick white film, it absorbs quickly and smells fantastic. When you buy a product, and it smells great it releases endorphins and a feel-good factor that can start your day off well.

My advice to anyone who is considering any aesthetic treatment is to protect your investment in your skin with a good SPF cream.

Regarding Anti-wrinkle injections, these are prescription-only medications and therefore we are not permitted to advertise them by name.  I have extensive experience in treating all areas from basic to advanced level injections using a variety of the most popular brands.

Regarding fillers, I have extensive experience using and training with the Juvederm range and more recently the Teoxane and Belotero range.  I have been really impressed with the performance of the new Teoxane RHA (resilient) range which is designed to move naturally with your face and not remain static. I am also a big fan of Teoxane Redensity 2 filler which is specifically designed and licensed for the tear trough (under eye) area and contains 14 natural essential nutrients designed to help dark eye circles. I may change and try new fillers on occasions, but I will only use smooth high-quality fillers manufactured with robust traceability.

I feel it is really important to be always training and always striving to improve.  It is vital to train in new techniques and use new technologies.  My aim is to provide the best treatments using the best quality products.  Regardless of which products I use I always strive for smooth natural-looking results. Sometimes less is more…

5). Top 3 things to avoid if you want picture-perfect wedding skin?

1). Avoid the Sun/Sun Beds!

The sun causes premature ageing, excessive wrinkles, dryness, irregular pigmentation and obviously the devastation of Skin Cancer.

This is everything we are trying to prevent and reverse.  Using sunbeds/getting a real tan will start to reverse all the improvements you have made.

There are plenty of amazing spray tans/self-tan options available.

Always wear sunscreen even on cloudy days. Most good makeup brands also have an SPF30-50 option so go treat yourself and protect yourself….

2). Avoid getting your 1st injectables very close to your wedding date!

Injectables are medical treatments involving needles and all have a potential list of side effects.

I have seen more than a few brides (& a few grooms) on social media suddenly decide to get Antiwrinkle or Dermal Filler treatment 2 weeks before their wedding day.  Unfortunately, they didn't research their injector or listen to the potential side-effects and arguably had their big day ruined by going to the wrong person at the wrong time and getting the wrong advice.

Choose your injector wisely, it is a very important journey for you, (not a sprint race) too much too quickly can long unnatural, so plan ahead and stay in control!

3). Avoid ignoring that one thing that really bothers you before your big day!

The amazing advancements in Aesthetic medicine over the last 10 years means it is now possible to greatly improve that one thing that has always troubled you all these years.  Often these things can be treated with very little downtime and no need for invasive surgery.

For some, it could be the lasting acne scars from your teenage years, or it could equally be that new unexplained acne in your 30’s and 40’s driving you up the walls.

It might even be that scar on your forehead, those stretch marks from pregnancy or that flesh coloured mole on your cheek just bugging you.

For some, it is the shape of your nose on side profile or your tired black circles under your eyes.

You can now get all these things assessed by an experienced professional and be offered a treatment plan to suit you to get you ready for that all-important big day!

6). What would you advise to get your skin wedding ready?

I would advise booking an appointment to develop a personal treatment regimen for you long before your big day.  Everyone is going to have different concerns, needs, requirements and expectations.

We have a vast array of treatments available for all skin conditions. Some Brides & Grooms may benefit from a series of Peels, LED light treatments, Dermapen micro-needling, Platelet Rich Plasma (made famous by Kim Kardashian), personal prescription medication not to mention the vast range of injectables offered.

I often use the analogy of seeing your skin like an oil painting.

You may wish to restore the underlying frame:

- Dermal fillers = help by restoring some of the volume loss behind the canvas and help build up the frame to its former glory. Giving support for the painting.

You may wish to help improve any lines or wrinkles in the canvas:

- Anti-wrinkle injections = help by removing lines and wrinkles in the canvas.

Finally, we need to ensure the quality of the canvas itself looks amazing:

- Our vast range of other treatments can help with irregular pigmentation, oiliness, dryness, acne flares even scarring.

7). What treatments are most popular amongst people getting married?

The most popular treatments for brides will always remain Antiwrinkle injections and Dermal fillers.

Lips are always top of most girl’s priority lists.  Thankfully we are seeing a trend away from overfilled lips and towards carefully sculpted natural enhanced looking lips. We are also seeing more men op for a more sculpted lip.

An ever-growing number of brides & grooms are looking for Non-surgical Rhinoplasties or nose jobs.  Now it is possible to help correct a hump, a dropped tip, even thin the nose and lift the tip using a combination of fillers, PDO threads and anti-wrinkle injections. It involves very little downtime and no need for invasive surgery. This treatment is technically difficult and only reserved for experienced injectors but is one that I really love performing. Seeing a client’s confidence restored with this treatment gives a great feeling of satisfaction.

Jawline sculpting is also very popular for both brides and grooms alike.  Obviously, these are two very different techniques and approaches depending on the sex of the patient. The males are looking for a stronger more masculine look while females are looking for a slimline more defined jaw and to tighten up under the chin.

The latest “tweakment” of 2021 called Profhilo has been extremely popular amongst brides & grooms.  It is essentially an injectable moisturiser that helps remodel the skin from within causing it to massively boost collagen and elastin production resulting in plumping tightening and firming of the skin.  All those lovely things our skin desires most…

Let’s not forget about the mother of the brides/grooms.  Many of my clients are mothers to the wedding party, and it is so important for them to feel confident and to look their best on the big day.  A big proportion of these treatments will involve gradually replacing their volume loss.  Often starting with restoring the cheek volume to its natural youthful look and helping reduce under-eye circles. We then target any other areas of concern from natural lip restoration to smokers lines /kissing lines around the mouth and the all-important necklines.

We can get great results for necklines and loose skin by using a combination of anti-wrinkle, Profhilo and PDO threads.  Another favourite of mine…

8). How long before a wedding would you advise someone getting married to look at getting a treatment?

Simple answer = The sooner the better….

Some weddings are booked a few years in advance…

The earlier you start your treatments the more time we have to make you look your best.

The perfect example is anti-wrinkle treatment.  It may not totally remove the deep static lines on your forehead or brow area after the 1st treatment but the more times you get it done the better the result each time.

It is also important to remember if your wedding is in 2 years’ time you are going to have aged by another two years when the big day arrives so start now and help slow and even reverse these signs of ageing.

Really look forward to seeing you at the clinic and hope you enjoy your special Galgorm wedding party discounts. Please ask your wedding planner for the up to date offers!
